Last night I had the absolute privilege of watching Edgar Wright's Baby Driver which was followed by a Q&A with Edgar Wright, Angel Elgort and Lily James. If anything, the film (and the Q&A) inspired me to make more films and to write more.
I had so much fun during the film, and was at the edge of my seat clutching my boyfriends arm towards the end of the film. The film had a payoff for every set up, there was no useless dialogue or action. The detail was right down to the tattoos of some of the characters. Every breath taken by someone on the screen revealed something. It was perfectly planned and extraordinarily executed by cast and crew.
The film also prompted me to think about style and the way that directors make their mark on films. Edgar Wright's scene transitions are one of his tells, and Sophia Coppola's films have a semi red and pink pastel hue to them. Speaking of, definitely go see The Beguiled.
I was also super lucky to be front row during the Q&A, as I was photographing the event. There was a great question from the audience about advice they had been given for their craft.
Lily James mentioned that Helena Bonham Carter told her it's okay to have a break down once a week, people need to know you're human.
Ansel Elgort's advice was from Edgar Wright, it was about being focused and being in the moment when doing your work.
Edgar Wright's advice came from Spike Jonze. Many people can make films, but only he can make the next Edgar Wright film.
This is advice that I think I'll probably take on for my career as a filmmaker, actor and writer. I have so many ideas, I need to focus on one at a time and get on to making that Marie Kelly film that only I can make.
Massive thanks to Village Cinemas for allowing/picking me to photograph the Q&A. It was an unforgettable experience.
