Writing

Since the early 2000s, I have been creating stories through poetry, short fiction and screenwriting. I majored in Creative Writing during my Bachelor of Arts studies at the University of Melbourne, which is where I discovered my love for poetry and screenwriting. This was followed by a Masters of Fine Arts in Screenwriting at the same university.

Several of my poems have been published by The Australian Times, a short fiction piece published by The Athena Review, as well as several articles and opinion pieces published by TheVine.com.au and The Guardian Australia. Since 2015, I have published six books: "Pixel People", "Painted Memories" ,"Tigers Play Hide and Seek", "Postcard Poetry", “Tales of Teenage Turbulence and Other Terrible Times” and “Me / You” - all of which you can purchase here. A seventh book titled “My Boots Are Made For Walking”, was a private commission and is not available for public purchase.

My first short fiction anthology, “Painted Memories”, was published in 2015. The anthology deals with themes of loss, love and memory. “Tigers Play Hide and Seek” is a children's book that I wrote and illustrated in 2005, I then reworked and republished it in 2017. A second short fiction anthology was published in 2018, and was titled “Tales of Teenage Turbulence and Other Terrible Times”. The humorous tales discuss the growing pains of adolescence; finding your feet, yet remaining awkward. A kindle version of this book is available to purchase at this link here.

In late 2015, I took up writing for The Vine, now known as Punkee. You can read all of my archived articles here.

In December 2019, a short fiction piece I wrote titled “Mirrors” was published by online magazine The Athena Review. You can read the story here.

In 2020, when it looked like community television would be switched off in Melbourne and Adelaide, I wrote an opinion piece for The Guardian Australia detailing why this would be such a loss. You can read the piece here.

Poetry

You can find the vast majority of my poems online on my Facebook page. You’ll also be able to find them at https://itsmariekelly.tumblr.com/, the original blog I used to post my poetry. My poetry which was originally written via typewriter and pen has been published in a collection titled, "Pixel People", which you can purchase here.

Postcard Poetry” is a photographic collection of poems and the various global locations where they were written. Written between 2015 and 2017, the collection was published in late 2017. You can purchase a copy of "Postcard Poetry" from this link.

My third collection of poetry, specifically love poems, “Me / You”, was published in 2021. It is available on kindle, and Amazon. You can check it out here.

Screenwriting

I graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts (a school of The University of Melbourne) in 2015 with a Masters of Fine Arts: Screenwriting. Since then I have entered several competitions for screenwriting, and written dozens of short films. Some of which are in pre-production. In early 2020, before lock down took effect, I completed an internship in the writers’ room at Neighbours (Fremantle Media). You can find out more about my film making adventures on the projects page.

You can also read all about my sci-fi screenplay Epidemic and its festival successes here.

Comedy

My love for comedy has been present since I was allowed to watch television. In 2019, I participated as a writer and actor for several sketch comedy groups which wrote and performed for live audiences. In 2021, I performed with sketch comedy group Dr Duck for the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, our four show run was sold out each night.
